It is an anti-theft feature built into all Mac computers and devices since 2018.
Find My is used for locating your devices and enabled items.
You can use the Find My app to locate friends, Apple devices, AirTags, or supported third-party items. Find My is available on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, and Apple Watch, and Find Devices is available on iCloud.com.
Apple requires all devices undergoing service to have the security feature temporarily turned off. For your protection and to prevent theft, Apple blocks the ability to order service parts if Find My is active on the unit being repaired.
Turning off Find My can be quickly done by either Apple System Settings on your Mac or iPhone, or through the iCloud online interface.
To help guide the process we have created the visual guide below. Links to Apple's online knowledge base for Turning off Find My are here.
First, make sure you're connected to the internet.
Choose Apple menu > System Settings
Then click your name at top of the side bar.
Click your Show More Apps...
to reveal additional settings.
Click on Find My Mac
Finally, click Turn Off... next to Find My Mac.
Next you will be prompted to enter your Apple ID account password, and then Find My will be removed.
If your Mac display isn't working or won't turn on, then you'll need to use another Trusted Device that is also logged into your Apple iCloud Account in order to disable it.
On your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings App.
Then click on your name at the top of the list.
If you're deactivating only this iOS device, click on the Find My settings highlighted in yellow.
If you're deactivating a different device like a Mac, click on the correct one in your list highlighted in red.
Click on Remove from Account to turn off Find My.
You will be prompted to type in your Apple ID password, and then the device will be released from the Apple Find My Activation system.
Our technicians will run your units serial number through Apple Global Service Exchange (GSX) to confirm it released successfully and then can continue with your repair.
Apple has a very detailed knowledge base article dedicated towards deactivating Find My, which is linked below.
Most importantly, Find My must be turned off before we can service your Apple product(s).
